Research interest
Being also a clinician in intensive care, I have always tried, as a scientist, to base my fundamental research on unresolved and important clinical issues.
After having studied lung injury and inflammation following mechanical ventilation, I have focused my research on lung infection and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). We started by looking at the role of fungal colonization on bacterial pneumonia development and found that colonization by Candida albicans facilitated development of bacterial pneumonia (Roux et al, Crit Care Med, 2009). We are presently investigating by which mechanisms this colonization alters innate immune response. Keeping in line with our interest in VAP, we have collected E. coli strains from the digestive tract, the oropharynx and the respiratory tracts of patients under mechanical ventilation and are studying the role played by their virulence factors in a mice model of pneumonia.
