Research interest

My PhD project is about the enzymatic variability in Escherichia coli and its consequences on growth and pathogenicity. The first approach I used was to reconstruct the metabolic networks of several E. coli strains from their genome annotations in collaboration with the Computational Systems Biology Group at the Genoscope (Evry, http://www.genoscope.cns.fr/bioinfo). This method highlights differences in the content in metabolic pathways between strains and thus explains the growth or no growth patterns observed experimentally on several substrates. But the enzymatic variability can also be studied at a more precise level: even when using the same metabolic pathways, bacteria can grow with more or less efficiency. Therefore to go further, in collaboration with the Fundamental Quantitative Genetics team at the ferme du Moulon (Gif-sur-Yvette, http://moulon.inra.fr/SGV/GQF/gqf.html), we try to understand the biochemical factors explaining the adaptation of a strain to its environment using proteomic and enzymologic data. The control of these mechanisms would especially allow the optimization of the microorganisms that are used in the industry while keeping the metabolic pathways of interest already developed. Besides this study will help us understand the selective advantages in colonization of some pathogenic bacteria during infection.
