Research interest

At a short time scale the behaviour of an evolving population mainly depends on the selective effect of point mutations. Today only few experimental data are available and nothing is really known about the distribution of deleterious effects. My work is orientated towards the determination of the probability distribution of the fitness modification caused by mutations and the influence of the genetic background (especially commensally or pathogenic strains) or genes specificities such as expression level, essentiality, protein designability, etc. I am using fluorescence and competition experiments to measure fitness of different Escherichia coli strains and mutants. I am also interested in the theoretical consequences on evolution of the shape of this probability function and especially of mutational robustness.
