Research interest

Adaptation to environmental stresses is essential for the survival of all organisms. They almost invariably respond to changes in their environment by modifications in genetic constitution or phenotypic adaptation. In order to study the phenotypic polymorphism in commensal and pathogenic Escherichia coli isolates, the metabolic and physiological responses (fluxome) of strains grown in different conditions are studied using NMR together with the measurements of enzyme activities and intracellular metabolite concentrations (metabolome). The capacities of colonization and pathogenesis of bacteria depend on their genotypic characteristics but also on their physiological characteristics. The whole-genome sequences of E. coli strains provide an opportunity to study phenotype-genotype correlations and to begin to understand how intraspecies physiologic diversity impacts host-pathogen interactions.
