The aim of my PhD project is to study the implication of virulence and resistance to antibacterial molecules on E. coli fitness. I am first looking for virulence markers by analysing the data of the project Coliscope, which goal is to sequence and compare several E. coli genomes (https://www.genoscope.cns.fr/agc/mage/wwwpkgdb/Login/log.php?pid=11). I will then perform, based on my first analyses, an epidemiological study on a natural population of E. coli coming from human and animal hosts, living in a unique ecosystem in French Guyana, where antibiotic source is completely controlled. Lastly, I will test the fitness of some selected strains in in vitro and in vivo assays. These results will help us to analyse the relationships between the structure of the E. coli population and the virulence and the resistance of the strains.
